The recruitment of two fish species with different recruitment strategies was studied in a Swedish fjord receiving waste-water from petrochemical industries. Plaice spawn far from the fjord and migrate into if after the larval stage. Viviparousblenny is stationary during its entire life, and the fry develops within the mother for 4-6 months, which enables studies of individual reproductive success. Low abundance and large mean size of both species in the effluent area compared with more distant localities indicate that the recruitment was impaired. A high mortality of blenny fry supports the conclusion. Serious effects occurred along at least six kilometres of the coast.
